Landscape has been a source of endless inspirations in Polish photography, and has been, over the years, subject to a variety of interpretations by Polish artists. Some of them have been enraptured with the beauty of the surroundings, while others have focused on giving landscape a new dimension by re-creating it in their own imagination. Landscape has been explored by many notable Polish photographers who will be presented during the unique 14th edition of the Fotografia Kolekcjonerska project entitled VIEWS. Landscape in Polish Photography.
The exhibition will open in Warsaw to be later moved to a venue of the International Festival of Photography Fotofestiwal in Lodz, where it will be rounded off with an auction of all the photographs, including a rare picture by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy), who photographed surroundings of Gubałówka Mount in Zakopane in the early 20th century. The Tatras Mountains will also appear several times in pictures by Stefan Arczyński, Edward Hartwig, Henryk Poddębski, and Antoni Wieczorek.
The exhibition will guide viewers through different places and times. It will end with the works of the photographers who have been successful in recent years: Kacper Kowalski, Filip Springer, Rafał Milach, and Ilona Szwarc.
The works presented at the pre-auction exhibitions will be rare prints made by a variety of techniques. The show will give viewers a unique opportunity to see a rich body of works by Polish photographers.

Across Drylands, Among Nomads attempts to capture the feeling of retrospection on a past, which never existed in reality, only in imagination. Travels to my ancestral state of Rajasthan after fourteen years was marked with an unsuccessful attempt to reproduce the same visuals I vaguely remembered having as a child. In my relentless efforts to produce the visuals, which might help me travel back in time, I started taking photographs of every nook and corner that made me reminiscent even to the slightest degree. What was interesting was that I was using composition to guide my retrospectives in a manner that would allow me to incorporate new elements in it. At the end of it, I had a set of images for myself, which would take me back in time, while keeping me in the present simultaneously…

The Independent AIR invites emerging artists using photography and lens based media to apply for a 10 days intense residency|masterclass in Silkeborg (Denmark).
During 10-day-long stay artists from all over the world, together with invited special guests, will share, inspire, discuss, and challenge the concept of contemporary photography and visual art.
This year eight artists will take part in the residency|masterclass. Seven young and emerging artists will be selected via an official public open call. The eighth sit is reserved for outstanding photography student of the Glasgow School of Art (Scotland).

The 2015 BZ WBK Press Foto Picture of the Year award winner is Agata Grzybowska (Gazeta Wyborcza) with the picture of weary demonstrators resting by the barricade on Instytutska Street, taken on February 20, 2014 in Kiev (Ukraine) that went down in history as Black Thursday. It was the day of the fiercest fights between demonstrators and Ukrainian security forces in Kiev resulted with nearly 70 people dead.

Once upon a time the Korle Lagoon – Accra (Ghana) – was a pristine wetland. Its waters used to be a home for thousands of fish and sea turtles, its mangroves a refuge for migratory birds escaping European winter.
Nowadays, placed in the heart of Accra Agbogblosie, a shanty town that settled on the banks of the Korle Lagoon in 1980’s, it is a refuge for migrants escaping poverty, drought, hunger and wars in rural areas of Northern Ghana and neighbouring countries. It is also the world’s largest dump for used electronics coming from Europe and other industrialised zones. There are 70,000 people living on a massive pile of a rotting trash – one of the world’s top ten worst polluted places according to the Blacksmith Institute’s index.
Although the Basel Convention forbids export of hazardous waste from developed to developing countries, Ghana imports 215,000 tons of e-waste a year. Globally, about 40-50 million tons of e-waste are generated each year…

We started The Sochi Project in 2009. Over the course of five years we wanted to map out the extensive region around the Russian resort Sochi – host of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. A controversial choice, because this subtropical coastal area lacked any kind of facilities and infrastructure at that time. At USD 51bln, this feast of fair-play sport rivalry became the most expensive Olympic Games ever. But the context in which the Games were taking place was, if possible, even more interesting.
The Games have been called Putin’s pet project, and he was personally in charge of their organisation. They were supposed to place Russia to its place on the world stage, and make the so-called ’humiliation of the 1990’s’ a thing of the past. The Games were organised in Russia’s most unstable region. Just twenty kilometres away is Abkhazia, officially part of Georgia but recognised in 2008 for the first time by Russia and three other countries as independent. A few hundred kilometres away there are the breakaway republics Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Dagestan, all bloodily pacified by the Russian army. And on the coast, old Soviet-era sanatoria stand shoulder to shoulder with the most expensive hotels and clubs of the Russian Riviera.
The Games themselves, but above all the surrounding area, offered a lifetime’s worth of writing and photographing material. That’s how we started The Sochi Project.

Unemployment and poverty in Kyrgyzstan continue to fuel illegal coal mining, a practice which has already taken the lives of scores of victims. After the huge Soviet mines in the region closed in the 1990s, jobless men started their own small operations. The infrastructure is lying in ruins and sadly pollute the environment. Citizens are left to their own devices in this poor mountainous nation of five million that has been in political chaos over the past few years.
Many residents of former mining towns and villages in southern Kyrgyzstan have no choice but to enter abandoned mines and extract what coal they can. To survive miners build a new zabojka – a poor shaft to a depth of 20 to 60 meters or they renovate old shaft left by Russians. Primitive underground corridors supported by thick wooden pegs can accommodate from four to five miners. They work about 10 hours daily equipped only with picks, worn-out helmets and headlights. Lack of proper ventilation is the most common reason of methane poisonings. When a tunnel collapses, there is little hope for rescue. But miners feel they do not have much choice because there are no jobs in the town. Locals call them Apaches for their black faces. The black market of coal dealers is exploiting the poor for labor in return for almost starvation wages. Each bag, that contains about 70 kilograms of coal, is sold for about 3 dollars. If Apaches are able to save any money after years of working in zabojkas they usually buy a popular Korean car – Daewoo Matiz and they become a taxi driver. This is a restful retirement of miners…
