DEBUTS is the world’s first guidebook to contemporary Polish photography. It presents the current trends in Polish photography through pictures taken by 36 most talented, young (at heart) Polish photographers, who are worthy of interest. All featured photographers are at the beginning of their photographic adventures – they debuted during the last 3 years. Each photographer is presented with their four works showing his or her approach to photography and current interests. Basic personal data, including website address and year of birth, are provided as well.
Young Polish photographers mainly talk about the world directly surrounding them. They do not mind taking on difficult subjects, and present them frankly and openly, with no discomfort. They are interested in everything: man’s place in a particular space, his relation to it, as well as with the group he functions in. More and more often they are interested in the junctions between the natural environment and the man-made world, their coexistence and interdependence. They document them neutrally, with no assessment.
There are no pictures designed for mass appeal, relying just on impact. Instead, there is a well thought out vision of reality. Everything is photographed thoughtfully, and reflects the photographers’ curiosity about the world and their great visual sensitivity.
Not only do the photos from DEBUTS intrigue, move and cause anxiety, but they also amuse. Some are spontaneous while others have been laboriously polished to bring out every composite and aesthetic detail. Their artistic expression sometimes reveals itself in intended messiness, and at other times through the return to noble photographic techniques.
DEBUTS is a long-term project under doc! photo magazine and contra doc! patronage, whose goal is to find and support the most talented, young Polish photographers.
